Why are (some) photos taken with (some) #Android phones so wide? My sister sent me this and it's 2000x929, effectively 2:1 ratio, which seems insane. I feel like there must be a technical reason but can't find anything on what passes for search engines these days.

@pete

It's probably down to what settings their photo app is on.

Mine offers 3:4, 9:16 or full screen.
There's also a panoramic option, if I want something wider.

Maybe your sister leaves her phone app on the full screen settings and hasn't looked at the alternatives.

@srfirehorseart @pete This -- my Android phone does full screen (16:7.2), 4:3, and 1:1.

@marblenote @srfirehorseart Thanks both! Coming from a photography background “Full Screen" is a bizarre concept but I can see how folks might like it.

So, is the sensor 4:3 which is cropped to "full screen" or 16:7.2 which is cropped to 4:3? (Only answer if you can be arsed - it's not life or death. :)

@pete On my Pixel phone I'm offered "Full image (4:3)" or "Wide crop (16:9)", but I imagine there will be some variance between handsets and camera apps.
