Hi like my TP-Link (Kasa) light bulb, as Home Assistant can talk to it directly.

I dislike my TCP Smart (Tuya) light bulbs, as Home Assistant has to use a non-local Tuya dev account to talk to them.

Is there a modern standard one should look out for when buying "smart" light bulbs, for direct communication without a "cloud" account?

@bigcalm Smart home protocols and standards are a total mess of walled gardens and interop issues.

Zigbee and ZWave devices are fairly well standardised and talk locally but you need adapters. It's also not uncommon for devices to require a manufactures hub to update.

For WiFi connected devices there are no widespread standards that I'm aware of and it's very much down to the manufacturer's design.

@intrbiz Found "SONOFF Universal Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus Gateway with Antenna for Home Assistant, Open HAB etc." on Amazon for £27.29.
Might be worth a punt, and see if it'll play with any of the devices I already have.

@bigcalm @intrbiz you can get a generic one on eBay for under a tenner. I did print a case for mine

@turmoni @intrbiz The cost of a printer might outweigh a barebones device ;)
