Had an idea for a #ttrpg dice mechanic where you have a hand of cards, and you choose a card and then need to roll equal or lower than its value on a d12. So Kings are great; Aces are bad. You can play multiple cards at once to add them; when you run out, you get a penalty and some more cards.
I doubt this is an original mechanic; I bet a bunch of games have done this before. Is it a good idea? Which other games have done this already, and how did they find it working out?

@sil Reminds me of a gambling mechanic in the board game Istanbul, where you say a number, then try to roll at least that on 2d6 to earn the amount you said. Applying this gambling idea to your hand management idea would be a layer too much, though, I suspect.

@mavit heh, that's clever. That's a bit too complicatedly strategic for frequent rolls in a fairly free-flowing ttrpg though, I suspect, as you say :)
