Tonight’s game: name people who thought they were bigger than the band they were in and so bailed, and then they were right. (You get a pass if you were as big as the band you were in.) That is: you’re arrogant and the arrogance was justified. There aren’t that many! Lots more thought it and were wrong. Our thoughts: Robbie Williams, Diana Ross, Cher, Tina Turner, Belinda Carlisle, Suzi Quattro. Currently arguing about Joan Jett.
@sil OTOH, if I don't need to know the backstory, how about Sophie Ellis-Bextor?
@mavit Nick Cave? not sure about that, unless I'm missing something. The Bad Seeds weren't just The Bad Seeds and then became Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds after a while a la Diana Ross and the Supremes, were they? They were always his backing band. But I don't like their stuff much so I don't know a lot of the story here
@mavit didn't know Frank Turner was in a band! The description suggests that the band split up and then he went on to have a solo career, though, rather than him leaving the band because he thought he was the important one and would do better without the others dragging him down... but "the band split up" could well be euphemism for him doing exactly that? I don't know the history here
