The flip side to “Europeans are lazy and don’t work hard” is that we’re able to maintain a modern society with a high standard of living while still being able to spend time with our families. And why kill yourself through overwork when most of the rewards go to somebody else, anyway?

@peterbrown unsurprisingly:

Finland now spends **15,000 euros less per year per homeless person** than it did before implementing Housing First

The savings are attributed to a decrease in emergency situations among homeless persons, such as assaults, injuries, and breakdowns

The savings in terms of services needed by one person can be up to **9,600 euros a year** when compared to the costs that would result from that person being homeless

I'm excited to be speaking at this years POSETTE - An Event For Postgres!

A totally online event, so no need to travel somewhere to listen to all the amazing speakers: citusdata.com/posette/2024/spe

For fuck sake, how the fuck can we still not get internationalisation right. My browser sets fucking locale headers, stop assuming that because I'm roughly in a country that you should localise the text. Like it's fucking easier to use the fucking header. Sorry, quite pissed off right now, by the idiots at LinkedIn.

Hello Prague, nice to be back. Looking forward to speaking at the Prague PostgreSQL meetup.

the upside of having ADHD is that I can complete a month's worth of work for a whole team in the space of a weekend and a couple of evenings.

the downside of having ADHD is that I keep putting myself in situations where I need to complete a month's worth of work for a whole team in the space of a weekend and a couple of evenings.

Now #PostgreSQL hacker Melih Mutlu of Microsoft is on stage at #PGDayChicago sharing his "Takeaways from Hacking on Postgres as a newcomer"

My favorite quote:

❞ I had only coded in C in CS101 in university & thought if I pass this class I will probably never code in C again"

Agencies have figured out that "customized COTS” means "expensive custom software that you don't actually own,” so vendors have started calling it "configured COTS." The problem is that some commercial software *is* extensively configurable by customers, and it can be tough to know which is which.

Here's the test to apply: Can the software be "configured” by the customer or any vendor of their choosing? If "yes," it's legit. If "no," it's just expensive custom software that you don't own.

Happy 😁 to share the news that all of the talk selection decisions for @posetteconf (free & virtual developer event, now in its 3rd year) were emailed out last week, as promised ✅

📝 🔬 In the interest of transparency, we thought we would share a bit about the process the POSETTE talk selection team used to create the roster of #PostgreSQL talks for #PosetteConf

@ChrisMayLA6 United utilities latest £300m profit, but paid out £400m+ in dividends.
Just think about that, they gave all the profit from peoples bills vs costs, then borrowed another £100m to give to its shareholders…
Then will ask for your bills to be put up to pay for any maintenance.
Nationalise now.

On privatisation, three decades ago, the water companies were passed to private investors debt free. Since then:

£78bn has been paid out in dividends

£64bn in debt has been taken o across the sector, and

£190bn has been spent on water infrastructure.... which given the current sewage & related crisis has been clearly inadequate!

Water firms across England want increases in bill of up to 70% in the next five years.

Like the railways, (re)nationalisation looks like the rational answer
